Skifree

SkiFree is a computer game by created by Chris Pirih, who was working as a programmer at Microsoft. The object of the game is simple - ski down a seemingly endless slope and avoiding the obstacles. Chris had created SkiFree in C on his home computer for his own education and entertainment, then one day he was playing it at work when a program manager for Microsoft Entertainment Pack passed by and noticed it. He decided that it should be in the next Entertainment Pack release and Microsoft licensed it from Chris for inclusion. The game was featured in the Best of Windows Entertainment Pack and there is also a ported version for the original Macintosh. In 1993 Chris started work on a second version to game, but it was abandoned for other projects when the original source code was lost.

Gameplay

At the beginning of the game, the user has four choices:
  • Enter the Free-style course
  • Enter the Slalom course
  • Enter the Tree Slalom course (a longer slalom course with trees interspersed)
  • Enter none of the courses, and just "ski free"

Tips and cheats

  • During the game you can slow the speed down by simply pressing the "s" key. To speed it up press the "f" key.
  • Press the Left Mouse Button at a dead tree to jump over it and set it on fire.
  • In the Free-style course, gain extra style points by letting the lift pass over you.
  • While travelling down the slope, if you use the "up" cursor key, and run over the brown trapizodal rock, from the bottem up, it turns into a hard mushroom thing.
  • If you follow the dog and run over it from the bottom up, it will urinate, and if you are on the free style section you will lose all your points. If you keep running over it, you will lose more each time.
In the Free-style course, the objective to collect "style points" by doing flips, going over moguls, etc. In each Slalom course, the objective to go around a specific side of several poles in the shortest amount of time.
  • If you aim right, you can get past the Yetis (there's two of them) by pressing "f" and going downward in a straight line, eventually you'll reach the top of the piste.

Abominable snowman

Once the player has completed their run, the game does not abruptly end. Rather, the player continues skiing until they encounter the abominable snowman. From that point on, the player can ski until the monster catches them.
