Skamania County, Washington Skamania County is a county located in the state of Washington. As of 2000, the population is 9,872. The county seat is at Stevenson. Its name derives from the Chinookan word for "swift water," a reference to the Columbia River. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,361 km² (1,684 mi²). 4,290 km² (1,656 mi²) of it is land and 71 km² (27 mi²) of it is water. The racial makeup of the county is 92.11% White, 0.30% Black or African American, 2.20% Native American, 0.54% Asian, 0.17% Pacific Islander, 2.43% from other races, and 2.25% from two or more races. 4.03% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,755 households out of which 34.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.50% are married couples living together, 8.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.60% are non-families. 21.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.02. In the county, the population is spread out with 26.60% under the age of 18, 6.70% from 18 to 24, 28.60% from 25 to 44, 27.10% from 45 to 64, and 11.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 101.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.40 males. The median income for a household in the county is $39,317, and the median income for a family is $44,586. Males have a median income of $36,732 versus $25,130 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,002. 13.10% of the population and 10.00% of families are below the poverty line.
