siouxland

Siouxland is a general term referring to the area around Sioux City, Iowa. This encompasses parts of northwestern Iowa, northeastern Nebraska and southeastern South Dakota. There are no official boundaries to Siouxland, but since the term is most frequently used by the local media, one can assume that Siouxland is roughly synonymous with the Sioux City media's sphere of influence. The term "Siouxland" was reportedly coined by author Frederick Manfred in 1947. Manfred was born in Doon, a small town in Lyon County, Iowa. The area near Sioux Falls, South Dakota is often referred to as the Sioux Empire. However, this area (and adjacent southwestern Minnesota) are sometimes considered "Siouxland" in the very broadest sense of the term.
