Shungnak, Alaska

Shungnak is a city located in Northwest Arctic Borough, Alaska. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 256.

Geography

Shungnak is located at 66°53'9" North, 157°8'15" West (66.885846, -157.137458). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 24.9 km² (9.6 mi²). 21.7 km² (8.4 mi²) of it is land and 3.3 km² (1.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 13.10% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 256 people, 56 households, and 51 families residing in the city. The population density is 11.8/km² (30.6/mi²). There are 64 housing units at an average density of 3.0/km² (7.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 5.47% White, 0.00% Black or African American, 94.53% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 56 households out of which 66.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.6% are married couples living together, 16.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 8.9% are non-families. 7.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 1.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 4.57 and the average family size is 4.53. In the city the population is spread out with 48.4% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 23.8% from 25 to 44, 12.9% from 45 to 64, and 6.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 19 years. For every 100 females there are 103.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 103.1 males. The median income for a household in the city is $44,375, and the median income for a family is $41,000. Males have a median income of $25,750 versus $33,750 for females. The per capita income for the city is $10,377. 35.8% of the population and 21.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 46.2% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
