Shophouse

A shophouse is a type of building found almost exclusively in Singapore and Malaysia. Built during the colonial era, they are mostly 2 to 3 storeys high. These served as both shops and houses to their inhabitants: the shops were on the ground floor, with living quarters above. Most shophouses were built in the early 20th century. In Singapore, shophouses are located around the city centre, Chinatown and Little India. In the post-independence years, the shophouses became old and dilapidated, but now are undergoing a revival of sorts. Some have been restored and renovated to house theatres, budget hotels and tea houses.

The term conservation has turned into a misnomer in Singapore; conservation efforts usually involving gutting out the entire house and renovating it to modern proportions. Definitely beautiful and reflective of the zen craze that has infected the architectural scene in singapore, there is delicious irony in seeing a conservation effort so thwarted.
