ShebeenA shebeen is an illegal, unlicensed bar or club. Shebeens are common in Kenya, where they are run by elderly women who compete for customers with other places by increasing the strength of their brew, sometimes by adding poisonous chemicals. Shebeens don't usually pay taxes on the alcohol they sell. Shebeen comes from an Irish word meaning illegal whisky.
