Shaktiman

Shaktiman is the first Indian super hero without much Hindu mythological background. Shaktiman appeared in the popular television serial produced by Mukesh Khanna first. In this serial, Mukesh Khanna acts as Shaktiman (Pandit Gangadhar Vidyadhar Mayadhar Ambernath Shastri). Shaktiman is one with super natural powers who fights against powers of darkness. Afterwards a comic series was also started in many Indian languages and English featuring Shaktiman. When the serial was launched on Doordarshan, there was a lot of controversy created when children set themselves on fire or jumped off buildings, hoping that Shaktiman would save them (as in the serial) and this caused an uproar in the country. In an effort to promote responsible behavior among children and to spread useful messages among them, Mukesh Khanna spent a substantial part of his allocated airtime in explaining to children that the stunts shown on television are not real and should not be emulated. Other educational information was also given during this part of the show (Chhoti chhoti magar moti baatein). Shaktiman is one of the longest running television series for children on Doordarshan.
