It was designed by Bertie Crewe and first opened in December 1911 as the New Prince's Theatre, changing its name to the Prince's Theatre in 1914. In 1962 it was sold to EMI and reopened in 1963 as the Shaftesbury Theatre. Parts of the ceiling fell in on July 20 1973, closing the production of the musical Hair.
