Shade's Children

Shade's Children is a young adult science fiction/fantasy novel written by Garth Nix. It was published in 1997 by HarperCollins. The cover art was designed and made by Elliot Earls. The story takes place in a future where nearly no adults exist and children rarely live above the age of fourteen. The earth is ruled by evil overlords who use humans' bodies and brains to create armies to battle at their amusement. Humans have developed unique powers that have evolved over years and are powered by radiation. There is a mysterious computer known as Shade who recruits children who have escaped from the overlords. Shade trains the children to fight the overlords but he has goals of his own that don't involve overthrowing the overlords.
