Severomorsk

Severomorsk (Russian: Северомо́рск) is a town in Murmansk Oblast, Russia, located about 25 km north of Murmansk. This is the main administrative base of the Northern Fleet. Severomorsk has the largest dry dock in the Kola Peninsula. It was founded in the second half of the 19th century as Vayenga settlement. The town status was granted in 1951; it was renamed Severomorsk at the same time. Together with its subordinated towns of Roslyakovo, Safonovo, Safonovo-1, Severomorsk-3, and Shchukozero has an urban population of approximately 53,800 people (2002).
