Self Sufficient Web Comics

Follows is a list of self sufficient web comics, that is web comics that produce the primary means of support for their artists/writers, whether through on-site advertising, web comic merchandising, books of the web comic, art commissions through the site, or reader donations.
  • Sluggy Freelance supports Pete Abrams, who was formerly a webmaster.
  • User Friendly supports J.D. Frazer, who was formerly a linux junkie.
  • Something Positive supports R.K. Milholland, who formerly worked in insurance. After Milholland got tired of hearing readers complain about his lateness and spelling errors, he challenged them to collectively donate a years worth of his current salary, and if they did he said he would write the comic full time for a year. They did, and now he does.
  • Megatokyo supports Fred Gallagher.
  • Penny Arcade supports Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins, and possibly their two wives as well. This is one of the few web comics to support its creators without any books of the webcomic, and without merchandising "everything and the kitchen sink," as many others do.
  • PvP supports Scott Kurtz.
Although web comics are extremely prolific, ones that become successful enough to produce a significant stream of income to support their creators are very rare. Often a web comic creator is lucky if the comic even supports its own hosting bills.
