, with responsibility for the
Department for Environment, Transport and the Regions
. The position (and department) were created for
John Prescott
. It was a merger of the positions of
Secretary of State for Environment
, the
Secretary of State for Transport
and some other functions. In
2001
the Transport, Local Government and the Regions functions became a full
Secretary of State
again, the Environment functions spun out into the
Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
. Some residual functions have been left with the
Office of the Deputy Prime Minister
. In
2002
Local Government and the Regions were separated from Transport and added to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. Environment, Transport and the Regions
