Seaside, FloridaSeaside, Florida is an unincorporated master-planned community on the Florida panhandle roughly midway between Fort Walton Beach, Florida and Panama City, Florida. It was founded by builder/developer Robert Davis and designed by architects/new urbanists Andrs Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk. Seaside is located in Walton County, Florida. The city is often cited as the first New Urban design. It is primarily a vacation community, and its success has raised property values tenfold over twentyfive years. Nevertheless, it is possible to rent a cottage in Seaside for a week's vacation at a surprisingly affordable cost. As a result, many thousands of people have learned from Seaside and have helped their own communities become more pedestrian friendly, humane places. The Seaside Institute, which conducts seminars on urban design throughout the country has helped spread the ideas and refine the techniques of the New Urbanism. (Seaside's founder and master planners were among the founding board members of the Congress of The New Urbanism.) Other New Urbanist communities, like Celebration, Florida, learned from Seaside. Celebration's success makes it also less heterogeneous in income than New Urbanist principles promote, but these principles have also been successfully applied to projeects which have converted derelict public housing projects to mixed-income neighborhoods under HUD's Hope VI program The movie The Truman Show was filmed in Seaside.
