Sea Of Rhn

In the fiction of J. R. R. Tolkien, the Sea of Rhn, or the Eastern Sea, is a large saltwater lake or sea in the east of Middle-earth. The Sea of Rhn, according to Tolkien's maps, covers roughly 400 square miles (1,000 km²). The Celduin (River Running) flows from the northwest into a northwestern arm of the sea, while several unnamed rivers flow from the northeastern shore. West of the Sea of Rhn is the land of Dorwinion and roughly 200 miles (300 km) to the South is the eastern end of the Ered Lithui. In The Atlas of Middle-earth, Karen Wynn Fonstad made it a remnant of the inland Sea of Helcar, which was destroyed in the battle of the Valar with Morgoth, the War of Wrath, but it was published before The Peoples of Middle-earth, where in Tolkien's late writings the Sea of Rhn is mentioned already in the history of the First Age as an apparently distinct body of water from the Sea of Helcar.
