Sea Bass

Sea bass is a name shared by a large number of different species of fish, including:
  • The Black sea bass (Centropristis striata, family Serranidae) is the common name of a species of fish whose range is eastern coast of the United States. This species is popular among recreational anglers and often appears in fish markets in the New York area.
  • The Giant sea bass (Stereolepsis gigas, family Percichthyidae) is a species of fish occurring off the coast of California. It has been known to weigh up to 557 lb (253 kg), but this is rare. Most Giant Sea Bass that are caught weigh less than 100 lb (45 kg).
  • In recent years, the demand for Patagonian Toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides, family Nototheniidae) also known as Chilean sea bass has greatly increased as it has become more and more popular fare in restaurants. Unfortunately, Patagonia Toothfish is now threatened by overfishing.

Bass is a general name given to a number of species of sport fish that may or may not be related. These fish include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, striped bass, sea bass. In general, they have in common a robust body and spiny rays in their dorsal fins.
