sclerenchyma (dict)

Sclerenchyma

Sclerenchyma is a tissue found in vascular plants. It is composed of tough fibers and thick-walled sclereids, both of which may contain lignin. The cells are dead at maturity, and they are packed tightly together. Sclerenchyma serves to support and protect the plant. It is usually in association with other tissues. Sclerenchyma can be found, with varying degrees of hardness, within stems, leaves, and fruits, especially nut shells or the gritty texture in pears. The bast fibers of flax and hemp are notable for their great length and softness, which is due to an absence of lignin and apical intrusive growth.
