Scipione PiattoliScipione Piattoli, an Italian priest and a resident of the Royal Castle in Warsaw, was private secretary to King Stanislaw August Poniatowski. Piattoli played a role in the preparation of Poland's May 3rd, 1791, Constitution (the May Constitution of Poland). The exact nature of that role remains uncertain. By some accounts, it was Father Piattoli who won the King over to collaboration with the leaders of the Patriotic Party on drafting a constitution. In some accounts, he prepared drafts of the document based on discussions of the principals, including the King, Hugo Kollataj (another Roman Catholic priest) and Ignacy Potocki. In one version, Piattoli actually drew up the document. At a minimum, he seems to have helped catalyze the process.
