Schuko"Schuko" (IPA: /'ʃuko/) is a widespread name for a type of plugs and sunken sockets, also frequently referred to as "Type F", which is often found in Continental and Eastern Europe but exluding France and Belgium which use a system with a male earth pin on the socket. Most moulded Schuko plugs have an extra hole to accommodate the earth pin of French sockets. "Schuko" is an abbreviation for the German word Schutzkontakt (literally: protective contact), which simply indicates that plug and socket are equipped with grounding contacts (in the form of clips rather than pins). This type of connectors usually yield 230 V at 50 Hz and allows a current of up to 16 A. Also, as the plugs sit in a large hole touching the pins during insertion or contact with the pins by an object falling behind a not quite inserted plug is rendered largely impossible. Therefore there is no need for partially insulated pins (as seen on europlugs british plugs and australian plugs). The system is in itself a pretty safe design however safety is compromised somewhat by intermatability with sockets that either don't have an earth or have an earth of a different type (for example some italian sockets). See Domestic AC power plugs & sockets for comparison with other plugs and sockets.
