Scarecrow Of Romney Marsh

The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh is a fictional character, he is the leader of the Dymchurch smugglers in the Doctor Syn novels of Russell Thorndike. The Reverend Dr. Christopher is the mild-mannered vicar of the little town on Dymchurch in Kent. Unknown to his parishioners the clergyman has a secret past in which he was the terrible pirate, Captain Clegg. Syn learns that his parishioners have been smuggling goods from France to avoid the extravagant import taxes the government charges. Realizing that the townsfolk are falling into an ambush, Syn races to their rescue. A suit of clothing borrowed from a scarecrow makes an improvised disguise. After this rescue Syn decides that he can only protect his people by becoming their leader. He makes a more elaborate scarecrow costume complete with eerie luminous paint. He organizes the smugglers into a well-organized band of 'night riders' with macabre disguises and code-names. Syn's cunning is so great that the smugglers outwit the government forces for many years. Eventually the Scarecrow's career comes to a tragic end as he is murdered by a former pirate crewman.
