Savannah State University

Savannah State University is a historically black university located in Savannah, Georgia. SSU was originally founded in 1890 as the Georgia State Industrial College for Colored Youth. The college was located in Athens, Georgia for several months during 1891 until moving to its permanent location in Savannah. In 1932, the school became known as Georgia State College. In 1950, the school changed its name to Savannah State College and gained university status in 1996. Savannah State's colors are blue and orange and their nickname is the Tigers. Savannah State sports teams participate in NCAA Division I (I-AA for football) and are independent. In the 2004-5 season, the Savannah State men's basketball team achieved the dubious honor of being only the second Division I school since 1955 to go through the entire regular season without winning one game.
