Sault Ste.marieSault Ste. Marie, Ontario Canada is a small city with a declining population in Northern Ontario. The city itself is located in the heart of both Lake Superior and Lake Huron. It is located directly on the border with it's twin city, Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan USA. In the early 60's, and 70's, Sault Ste. Marie, ON was a boombing town with a strong industry in both their giant Paper Mill and Algoma Steel (ALG.TO). However, as time passed and foreign imports became a vital reality of business success, the demand for their steel industry diminished. Two times within the past 8-years Algoma Steel has declared bankruptcy and laid off large amounts of workers. Most recently, Algoma Steel was bailed out by the Ontario government which promised interest free loans. Perhaps a succes as their stock has risen once again to over $25.00 on the Toronto Stock Exchange. In 2004, Algoma Steel was purchased by UK-led company. Sault Ste. Marie is a city that has seen population in decline. Since the early 90's, population was as high as 85,000 residents, by the mid 90's population was changed to 81,000. Sometime in the late 90's the population sign once again change to 76,000, StatsCan now estimates that the cities population is 72,000 and will continue to decline to 64,000 by 2010 as the cities youth vacates the city for sunnier pastures and employment oppurtunities. It is often said that to get a good job in the city, you need to wait for someone to die or retire to take their place. This statement provides an accurate view of the prosperity where you can be considered lucky to aquire a position at the Great Northern Road Burger King. The cities employment received a "big boom" when several call centers decided to base themselves in Sault Ste. Marie, ON. EDS, and the Sutherland Group provided many jobs to the community thru telemarketing which average between 8-20 dollars per hour.
