Sasolberg

Sasolberg is a small oil producing town in the Freistaat or Free State (formerly Orange Free State) in South Africa. It is named after the huge Sasol oil refinery based there. Sasol, along with AECI and other companies, specialized in producing oil (which is otherwise unavailable in South Africa) from coal (of which South Africa has an abundance). This became particularly necessary during the trade embargoes in the late 1970s and 1980s. Sasolberg is at a high altitude, which gives the town a very dry climate. It is situated on the Vaal river, which separates the free state from the state of Transvaal, and is not far from the Vaal Dam where excellent windsurfing spots can be found.
