Saskatchewan Forestry Centre

Saskatchewan Forest Centre

Established due to need of enhancing knowledge base for the forest sector in Saskatchewan, the forestry centre was established as a non-profit organization in 2001. The Board of Directors consists of industry representatives, government agencies, and Aboriginal groups involved in forest development. This project is funded by several provincial and federal government agencies (Federal based funding: Natural Resources Canada (Canadian Forest Service), Western Economic Diversification Canada)(Provincial based funding: Industry and Resources, Environment, Agriculture, Food and Rural Revitalization). There are several units that communicate and help give the Saskatchewan Forest Centre its knowledge and information. These units are attached to other partners to achieve the maximization of knowledge base, both units and partners are as follows: Value Added Unit: Partnership with Forintek Canada Corporation Fire/Forest Ecosystems Unit: Partnership with GeoSpatial Consulting Inc. and Forest Enigneering Research Institute of Canada (FERIC) Agroforestry Unit: Partnership with Canadian Forest Service's (Natural Resources Canada) Forest Information Centre Unit: Partnership with Sask. Environment Niche Opportunities Unit: has no partnerships, ran solely by Saskacthewan Forestry Centre Each of these units communicate together with the Saskatchewan Forestry Centre, upon which the information is sent to the Chief Executive Officer, and then to the Board of Directors. This system allows a comprehensive source to information, needs, and other primary considerations, that can be funneled to the Board of Directors to use with majour decisions. The newly formed organization of the Saskatchewan Forestry Centre shown above has made a couple new developments already. Two new developments are the SFC Forest Resource Centre and the SFC Virtual Data Warehouse. The Virtual Data Warehouse (VDW) began its operation in the spring. It will deliver a web enabled geographic information system (GIS) and data management system. There are also other forest related agencies who have made their home in the new Forestry Centre in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan (Since January 7, 2005). Sakatchewan Forestry Association and BioForest Tech. are two examples of this. The new centre has also created new partnerships with universities, technical institutions, the private sector, and internation forest-related institutions. Future developments is a member driven organization plan.
