Sandy Area Metro
(SAM, sometimes called
the Fareless SAM
) is a small
public transit
system operated by the
city
government
of
Sandy, Oregon
. One SAM route provides service between Sandy and the
Portland
suburb of
Gresham
, where riders can use
TriMet
to commute within most of the
Portland metro area
. A new route between Sandy and
Eagle Creek
, where riders can also connect with
TriMet
to go to
Estacada
, opened on
July 2
,
2003
. Rides on the Sandy-Gresham route are free, which is completely funded by
payroll tax
. Rides on the Sandy-Eagle Creek route cost $1.00, and that route is partially funded by a federal grant.

SAM was created after they city successfully petitioned
TriMet
to be removed from the
TriMet
system in the late
1990s
