Salvador De Madariaga

Salvador de Madariaga (July 23 1886, A Corua, Spain - December 14 1978, Locarno, Switzerland) was a Spanish diplomat and writer. He is the father of Nieves de Madariaga and the grandfather of Javier Solana. Starting 1931 and 1936 Salvador de Madariaga served several times as Spanish ambassador to the United States. He was also chief of the Disarmament Section of the League of Nations. In 1936 he started his teaching career at England's Oxford University. He was said to be one of the ten best conversationalists in the Europe of his day. In his writing career he ranged from books about Christopher Columbus to analysing what he considered to be the growing Communist threat to Latin America. 1973 he won the Karlspreis for contributions to the European idea and European peace.
