Sakaiminato, Tottori

Sakaiminato (境港市; -shi lit. Sakai seaport) is a city located in the northern area of Tottori Prefecture, Japan. Located at the northern end of Yumigahama Peninsula, it faces the Sea of Japan, another sea Nakaumi and Sakai channel. As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 36,910 and the density of 1,283.83 persons per km². The total area is 28.75 km². The seaport of Sakaiminato is one of most famous fishery ports in Japan. There is Miho airbase run by Japan Defense Agency. This airbase is opened to civil purpose and called usually Yonago airport. The city was founded on April 1, 1956. Recently the merge with Yonago and other neighbor municipals was proposed but the majority of citizen voted against this merge and it had been decided Sakaiminato would remain as an automonous municipality.
