S-adenosylmethionine

S-adenosylmethionine, also known as SAM-e. SAM-e is an intermediate metabolite of methionine. Properties of SAM-e SAM-e involvement in methylation assists in cellular growth and repair, maintains the phospho-bilipid layer in cell membranes. It also helps in the maintenance of the action of several hormones and neurotransmitters that affect mood. Highest concentration are found in the brain and the liver.

Pharmaceutical Property

Popularly prescribed for osteoarthritis. Common recommended doses are between 200-400 mg/day by oral administration, taken 3 times/day. Uses of SAM-e for other conditions are not recommended. May cause nausea in high doses.
