Ryoma EchizenRyoma Echizen (越前 リョーマ Echizen Ryōma) is the main character of the manga and anime, Prince of Tennis. The insolent 12-year old is a student at Seishun Academy Middle School, or "Seigaku" in short. He is the first year ace of the Seigaku tennis club. He has brilliant tennis skills and has a career of winning the American junior tennis championship tournament four times in a row. He is an all-round tennis player and his special abilities are Twist serve, One foot split-step and Drive volley. Above all his Twist serve is powerful. With his amazing control, the ball spins at the opponent's legs, then jumps straight up as fast as the lightning. His most impressive skill is to evolve during the course of matches, improvising new techniques such as "Drive B" and "Cool Drive". Although he is left-handed, he sometimes pretends that he is not. He plays the game with his right hand and changes it in the game, a technique known as "nitoryuu" or ambidexterity. This surprises his opponents and hurts their pride. His catchphrase is "mada mada dane," literally meaning "no, not yet." Depending on the context, it can either mean "you're not ready to win yet" (to an opponent) or "it's not over yet." (Ryoma also knows a fair amount of English, and in the manga, he says "You still have lots more to work on.") At the beginning of the series, all of Ryoma's tennis skills are complete copies of those of his father's, former tennis great Nanjiro Echizen. With the help of team captain Kunimitsu Tezuka, Echizen realizes he needs to develop his own style of tennis, especially if he wants to fulfill his dream of finally defeating his father. The JTA (Japanese Tennis Association) has accepted Ryoma Echizen as a formal image character of the organization.
