Ryaniverse

'Ryaniverse' is fandom jargon for the fictional universe centered on Tom Clancy's character Jack Ryan and the other characters associated with him in Clancy's series of popular novels. In terms of history, that of the Ryaniverse is identical to that of our own up until around the early 1980s; at this point, a number of important dissimilarities arise, including the defection of a Russian missile submarine, Red October (Krazany Oktyabr), a brief armed conflict between the United States and Japan, and the subsequent election of Jack Ryan after the death of the then-President. However, certain other worldly events are the same as that of our own universe, such as the Cold War and the War on Terror. And, while earlier books carefully ignore the September 11th terrorist attacks in favor of Clancy's pet national catastrophe (the hijacked plane crashed into the Capitol at the end of Debt of Honor), that attack reappears in his latest novel, Teeth of the Tiger, when a doctor helps the team with a succinylcholine injector pen because "his brother was a trader on the 102nd floor of tower 2". Clancy has been quoted as saying on Usenet that continuity is not always his most important priority.
