Russell Lee and his team of ghost writers were the authors of True Singapore Ghost Stories, a series of books that have been among the most popular sources of ghost stories in Singapore ever since when Book 1 was released in the early 90s. Each book is a compilation of creepy tales relating to the supernatural, all of which were (allegedly) sent to Russell Lee and his team by people who have had such experiences. Most of the stories occurred in Singapore, with a few set in Malaysia. In addition, Lee also included articles about the paranormal, featuring detailed investigations into the occult, witchcraft, vampires and other similar topics. Lee had stressed that these articles were for reading pleasure, not for research. Russell Lee himself was quite an enigma. Shortly after the immense success of his first book, readers began to wonder who he was. Lee never included any photographs of himself or revealed anything about his personal life. Whenever he appeared in public, he wore a hood, sunglasses and clothes that covered every inch of his body. The reason for this may be because, as his name was already associated with his hugely popular ghost stories, he wanted to look mysterious himself as opposed to appearing as an ordinary person. In most of his books, Lee reminded readers that he only wrote for one publisher, Flame of the Forest. This was because after his first book, there had been another series of ghost stories books written in a nearly identical format. This second series was also named True Singapore Ghost Stories, with Russell Lee's name on the cover, but having a different publisher. Lee stated that this was another writer who released the books under his name, claiming to be the real Russell Lee. Not all of Russell Lee's readers were fans though. There were a number of people who found his stories too contrived and hokey, suspecting that Lee had made up the stories himself.
