Russell Coutts

Russell Coutts DCNZM CBE (b. 1962) is a New Zealand–born competitive sailor and is considered by many to be the best match racer in the world. In 2004 he only competed twice on the Swedish Match Tour, but won both events convincingly. Coutts left New Zealand to join the Alinghi America's Cup Syndicate run by Ernesto Bertarelli. Previously he was part of the New Zealand team that won and defended the Americas Cup in 1995 and 2000, and was heavily criticized for leaving to sail for Alinghi. In late July 2004, Coutts's employment with Alinghi Holdings was terminated over allegations of contractual breach.
