Ruby CabernetRuby Cabernet is a red wine grape created in 1936 by Dr Harold Olmo at UC Davis in California. It is a cross of Cabernet Sauvignon and Carignan and the intention was to combine Carignan's heat tolerance with Cabernet Sauvignon's quality. Ruby Cabernet produces a medium bodied red wine with good colour and a pleasant cherry flavour, but has not yet demonstrated it can produce a quality wine. It is popular with growers because it can withstand high winds and can be planted in areas that other vines cannot. Much Ruby Cabernet goes into ordinary blends, but increasingly varietal wines are being released. It is mostly planted in California and is found also in South Africa, Chile, Argentina and Australia.
