Roque Mspoli

Roque Gastn Mspoli (October 12, 1917 - February 22, 2004) was a goalkeeper in soccer for Uruguay. Mspoli was born in Montevideo, Uruguay. He was popular among the Uruguayans and unpopular in Brazil. In the final match of the 1950 World Cup, known as the "Maracanazo" for Uruguay's surprising win at the Maracan stadium in Rio de Janeiro, in front of 200.000 noisy brazilians fans, Mspoli allowed just one goal as the visitors beat huge favorite Brazil 2-1. Mspoli also coached Uruguayan soccer team Pearol, with which he won five national championships, the Copa Libertadores and the 1966 Intercontinental Cup, when his team beat Real Madrid 4-0 on aggregate. Later, he led teams in Spain, Peru and Ecuador. In the 1980s, Mspoli spent several years coaching the Uruguay national team. Roque Mspoli was hospitalized on February 10, 2004 for heart ailments. He died twelve days later in Montevideo, Uruguay.
