Roger

Roger is primarily a proper name of English and French usage which means "famous with the spear" from the Germanic elements hrod/"fame" and ger/"spear." The name "Roger" was transmitted to England by the Normans after the Norman Conquest along with other names such as William, Robert, Richard, and Hugh.

Radio

The word is also used in radio communications to indicate receipt of a message. From around 1938 it was the military phonetic for the letter "R" abbreviation for "Received," later replaced by "Romeo."

Slang

It is also a short version of the term Jolly Roger which refers to a black flag with white skull and crossbones, formerly used by sea pirates since as early as 1723. It has an old (1711) vulgar slang usage as a verb where it means to have sexual intercourse with a woman. Used of a man. From 1650 to 1780 it was slang for the word "Penis."

Football (Soccer) Player

Roger Galera Flores is also a football (soccer) player for the Portuguese club SL Benfica.
