History
The area has been inhabited since
Dacian
and
Roman
times. In the
Middle Ages
, a fortress was built; during
Matei Basarab

Constantin Brancoveanu
, it became an important cultural center. It was here that the first
paper mill
and
printing press
in Romania were built. During the
1848
revolution, on
July 29
"
Desteapta-te, Romane!
", the current national anthem of Romania, was sung for the first time. In the 1980s the town has been completely rebuilt in a style combining
socialism-realism
with local vernacular architecture.
