River Rouge is a city located in Wayne County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 9,917.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.8 km² (3.4 mi²). 6.9 km² (2.7 mi²) of it is land and 1.9 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 21.70% water.

Demographics

As of the census ² of 2000, there are 9,917 people, 3,640 households, and 2,504 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,434.1/km² (3,713.9/mi²). There are 4,080 housing units at an average density of 590.0/km² (1,528.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 52.58% White, 42.01% African American, 0.78% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.63% from other races, and 2.80% from two or more races. 4.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,640 households out of which 36.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 31.4% are married couples living together, 30.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% are non-families. 26.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.72 and the average family size is 3.25. In the city the population is spread out with 31.2% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 18.8% from 45 to 64, and 10.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 89.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.1 males. The median income for a household in the city is $29,214, and the median income for a family is $33,875. Males have a median income of $35,613 versus $24,391 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,728. 22.0% of the population and 19.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 30.6% of those under the age of 18 and 10.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
