Richard Wawro

Richard Wawro (born 1952) is a British autistic savant artist living in Scotland. Wawro was born 1952 to a family of Scottish father and Polish-born mother. He was diagnosed autistic at the age of 3. He did not learn to speak before the age 11 and required eye surgery to remove cataracts. Also at the age of 3, Wawro begun to draw at chalkboard. In the local children's center at the age of 6 he begun to use crayons. His talent was recognized soon after. He had his first exhibition in Edinburgh when he was seventeen. Wawro still paints in wax oil crayons. He also remembers every picture, and where and when he made it. He does not use models but draws very accurate pictures from memory. He gets his father's approval for each picture. Wawro has sold thousands of paintings to people like Pope John Paul II. Over his career he has painted many landscapes and seascapes. He gets them from images that he has seen only once from books and television. One of his major inspirations is light.
