Richard Mountford Deeley

Chief Mechanical Engineer
(CME) of the
Midland Railway
. He was succeeded in
1909
by
Henry Fowler
. Deeley was born in
Chester
, the son of a
Midland Railway
accountant. He became a pupil of
Samuel W. Johnson
at
Derby
Works and was promoted to locomotive superintendent in
1904
. He made significant contributions to
compounding
, adopting Smith's system for his "Midland Compound" 4-4-0s.
