Ricardo Chailly

Ricardo Chailly (born 1953) is an Italian conductor. He was born in Milan into a musical family, his father being a composer. He made his conducting debut at 14 with I Solisti Veneti at Padua. At 19, he became the assistant conductor to Claudio Abbado at La Scala. He made his US debut conducting Puccini's Madama Butterfly with the Lyric Opera of Chicago in 1974, as well as performances at the San Francisco Opera and the Metropolitan Opera. From 1982 to 1988, he was the principal conductor of the Berlin Radio Orchestra, as well as being principal guest conductor with the London Philharmonic. In 1988, he became the principal conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, as well as musical director of the Municipal Theater in Bologna. He has an exclusive contract with Decca Records and has recorded extensively, both the symphonic and the operatic repertoire.
