Rfc 2246

Dierks, T., Allen, C. The TLS Protocol Version 1.0. Proposed Standard RFC 2246 (IETF: 1999 January).
This is the current IETF specification for Transport Layer Security (TLS). The background and motivation is also described. A supplemental specification provides a set of extensions that preserve interoperability with unextended clients and servers:
Blake-Wilson, S., Nystrom, M., Hopwood, D., Mikkelsen, J., Wright, T. Transport Layer Security (TLS) Extensions. Proposed Standard RFC 3546 (IETF: 2003 June).
The specifications are comprehensive, providing useful references for digging deeper. As with all IETF RFC documents, it is important to check the current index of RFCs to determine the status and availability of revisions and updates. Individual RFCs are never altered once published and may have been supplanted.
