Reykjanes

The peninsula Reykjanes (also known under the name Reykjaneskagi) is situated at the south-west end of Iceland not far from the capital Reykjavk. Reykjanes, meaning the fuming area, is marked by the active volcanism under its surface. The big lava fields covering it are showing only scarce vegetation. The earth is actually "fuming" or emitting vapour of different kinds, at the hot springs and sulphur springs in the south of Reykjanes, around the Kleifarvatn and Krsuvk. There is also a big geothermal power station at Svartsengi. Not far from the power station, a well renowned and modern swimming pool has been installed using the hot and mineralized water coming down from the power station and out of the earth: the so-called Blue Lagoon (Bla Lni). Some fishing towns like Grindavk or Njarvk are situated on the peninsula as well as the town Keflavk with the American military base and the International Airport Leifur Eriksson.
