Reserve, New Mexico

Reserve is a village located in Catron County, New Mexico. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 387. It is the county seat of Catron County. On December 1, 1884, near town (then called Frisco), deputy sheriff Elfego Baca held off a gang of 80 Texan cowboys who wanted to kill him for arresting cowboy Charles McCarty. The cowboys were terrorizing the area's Hispanos and Baca was working against them.

Geography

Reserve is located at 33°42'31" North, 108°45'39" West (33.708493, -108.760822). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²). 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 387 people, 177 households, and 103 families residing in the village. The population density is 266.8/km² (696.2/mi²). There are 238 housing units at an average density of 164.1/km² (428.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 80.10% White, 0.52% African American, 0.52% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 13.95% from other races, and 4.91% from two or more races. 40.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 177 households out of which 25.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.8% are married couples living together, 14.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.8% are non-families. 39.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.14 and the average family size is 2.84. In the village the population is spread out with 24.5% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 20.9% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 95.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.6 males. The median income for a household in the village is $24,750, and the median income for a family is $30,536. Males have a median income of $30,833 versus $16,000 for females. The per capita income for the village is $14,612. 17.8% of the population and 14.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.6% of those under the age of 18 and 9.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
