ReploidA Reploid, from the science-fiction video game series Mega Man X, is a robot that has the capability to think and make decisions for itself without human programing. The game main character, Megaman X, an advanced robot left behind by now-deceased Dr. Light (of Mega Man series fame), was discovered by an archeologist named Dr. Cain in the wreckage of Dr. Light's lab and, by studying Light's designs and notes, was able to construct a race of robots, called 'Reploids' because they replicate X's design. Many of these Reploids eventually go Maverick, usually due to a computer virus called the Maverick Virus. There are many notable reploids in the series, see List of Mega Man characters (X series) for a list of some of them. Contrary to popular belief, both of the robots Megaman X and Zero are not classified as reploids, because neither of them are replicants of other robots; reploids are copies of Megaman X's design. X and Zero are original creations of Dr. Light and Dr. Wily, respectively. The term Reploid is similar to Replicant, the name of the artificial life-forms from the movie Blade Runner. There are distinct parallels between both stories: androids or robots rebel against their creators and pose a significant danger due to their increased strength and intelligence; the robots are designed to imitate human life (though only a few Reploids are anthropomorphic; most are animal-shaped, or abstract like the famed Metool); and the hero of the story is a robot who must kill his own kind for the good of humanity.
