Religous ViewsJean Bertrand Aristide Aristide was born July 15, 1953, in a town along side Haiti. He was an orphaned during his infancy to be raised by priests of the Society of St. Frances de Sales of the Roman Catholic Church. This religious order was focused on the spiritual instruction of the poor and the orphaned children. Aristide was dependent upon the Salesians for his livelihood. He received his early education in parochial schools from the seminary in Haiti, the University of Haiti, University of Montreal were he received a degree in psychology, and was later sent to Israel, Britain, and Canada for biblical learning. In the year 1982, Aristide became an ordained priest. During his learning stage, he learned to read French, Spanish, English, Hebrew, Italian, German and Portuguese with his native language of Creole. Aristide enjoyed writing poetry and composing on his guitar. Later in 1988 Aristide was expelled for “fidelity to the poor” because it was considered radical and inflaming to his parishioners against Haiti. His antagonism to the dictatorship grew out of his religious convictions and the empathy with the sufferings of the Haitian people. He worked among Haiti’s poor and was very progressive in opposing the Duvalier dictatorship. Aristide became a candidate of a coalition of leftist parties in the year 1990 presidential elections. He was elected with an overwhelming majority only to later be over thrown in a bloody military fight after taking office. Thereafter, he went into exile in Venezuela and from there he moved to the United States. He did not rise to power again until 1994.
