Registered Nurse

right Registered Nurse (RN) is the U.S. term for a professional nurse who is licensed and registered. In the U.S. its the state in which he or she practices that issues the license. RNs work to promote health, prevent disease, and help patients cope with illness. When providing direct patient care they assist physicians and other professionals; administer medications; observe and record symptoms, reactions, and progress in patients; and assist in convalescence and rehabilitation. The cap traditionally identifies a nurse. During a so called capping ceremony nurses make the nightingale pledge and then put on their caps. Today, there are nurses in the U.S. who do not wear caps, although remains universal in many countries. The cap remains a well-known symbol of the nursing profession. RNs also develop and manage nursing care plans, instruct patients and their families in proper care, and help individuals and groups take steps to improve or maintain their health. See also: nurse, nursing.
