Red Hat Society

The Red Hat Society, Inc. is a women's social organization whose full members, who must be over fifty years old, wear red hats and purple dresses. Members are often called “Red Hatters”. Women under fifty can join, but wear a pink hats and lavender dresses. The organization was founded by Sue Ellen Cooper; its aim is simply fun for its members. The society takes its name from the opening lines of the poem When I Am an Old Woman by Jenny Joseph, which read:
When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat that doesn't go and doesn't suit me.
