Realrhapsody

RealRhapsody is an online music store, operated by RealNetworks, Inc.. It was launched in December, 2001, before its competitors MusicNet and the current incarnation of Napster, ne pressplay, and a year and a half before Apple's iTunes Music Store.

Acquisition

RealNetworks acquired the service on August 3, 2003. It was previously known as Rhapsody and was operated by Listen.com, Inc. which is now a subsidiary of RealNetworks.

Harmony

RealRhapsody customers could use the Harmony plug-in, distributed by RealNetworks, to convert tracks purchased from the RealRhapsody service into FairPlay AAC files for use on Apple iPod digital music players. Apple have countered this feature by modifying the firmware on iPods via updates to prevent playback of these converted files without affecting tracks purchased via Apple's iTunes Music Store.
