raymond goethals

Raymond Goethals, (October 7 1921-December 6 2004), is considered the most stubborn Belgian national soccer trainers of all time. He started his career in 1933 (age 12) as soccer goal keeper in the Daring Club de Bruxelles youth system. From 1949 until 1952 he played at Racing de Bruxelles. Following that, he became trainer of Waremme and K. Sint-Truidense V.V. In 1968 he became trainer of the Belgium national football team, nicknamed the Red Devils. In 1972 the national team won third place on the European Championship. In 1977 he resigned as national trainer and started working with Sporting Anderlecht. In 1977 this team was second in the national final. In 1978 it won this final. After that he trained the Standard of Lige, who won the Belgian Championship in (1982 and 1983). In 1987, he returned to Anderlecht and won, once more, the Belgian cup. In 1990 the French team Olympique Marseille hired him in order to win the European Cup, which they did in 1993 with 1-0 win against AC Milan.
