Randy's Donuts

Randy's Donuts is a landmark building in Inglewood, California near Los Angeles International Airport that dates back to a period during the mid-20th Century that saw a proliferation of kitschy buildings throughout Southern California that were made in the shape of the products they sold. In the case of Randy's, the product in question is represented by a 22-foot/6.7m diameter doughnut on the roof of an otherwise ordinary drive-in that is a dedicated doughnut bakery. This building has appeared in a number of music videos including "I Love LA" by Randy Newman and a work by Snoop Doggy Dogg that had the rapper looking down from the roof. It was also featured in an episode of Futurama and in several movies including Earth Girls Are Easy. A donut shop remarkably like Randy's also appeared in an episode of The Simpsons. One of only three similar buildings that survive in the area (the other two are in Los Angeles and La Puente), Randy's was built in 1953 as part of the now-defunct Big Donut chain and is the lone remaining example. The 24-hour drive-in is at 805 West Manchester Avenue at the corner of La Cienega Avenue and is near the Manchester Avenue off-ramp of the San Diego Freeway. See also: Googie
