Ramtaskaupi

The ramtaskaupi (literally "The New Year's Eve fun") television show has become an important part of Icelandic New Year's celebration. It focuses upon the recent year from a satirical standpoint, and shows its victims little mercy, especially politicians and prominent businessmen. Icelandic New Year's Eve customs are such that it is held with some equality to Christmas Eve. Excessive use of fireworks is rather characteristic for Icelandic New Years, explosions going off more or less constantly from the 30th of December to the 6th of January (called rettndinn ("The thirteenth"), referring to thirteen days having passed since Christmas eve). However, there is one major gap in the firework use during that time - between 22:00 and 23:30 on New Year's Eve, during the showtime of the ramtaskaup.
